I’m living proof that a cheap notebook can bring positive change in your life.
Every year around this time, I buy a 200-sheet spiral notebook at the grocery store. The purchase sets me back about $3.00, and the rewards are at least a hundred fold.
We all need a place where we can be real and messy and imperfect.
An inexpensive spiral notebook can be your laboratory to explore and think and process and go wherever you want to in the year ahead. It’s a place where you can define what happiness, contentment and success might look like for you.
Writing Your Way to Personal Growth
On the nice, empty pages of your unfancy notebook, you can record your resolutions and hopes and dreams and goals.
You can collect all your crazy (and not-so-crazy) business ideas.
You can jot down that awkward first date conversation you overheard in the cafe, because you might like to use it as dialogue someday when you write your novel.
You can keep track of all your future home improvement projects.
You can write your gratitude list.
You can jot down all the plants you’d love to grow in your garden this year.
You can write the first draft of a love letter.
Create Positive Change
You can keep a list of charming cottages for rent in the English countryside, and research all the airfare deals to London.
You can write your way out of a problem.
You can scribble down recipe ideas.
You can write a prayer.
You can plot the next steps of your career.
You can pen a poem.
You can write without any particular goal in mind, and see what emerges on the paper.
If you write something that later embarrasses you or that you wouldn’t want your family to discover, you can rip the page out and no one will be wiser. Unlike fancy journals, cheap spiral notebooks are forgiving that way.
How About You?
Could a nice, fat, blank notebook help you navigate the coming year? Do you need a place where you can totally be yourself, a place to write and see where your thoughts take you? I’d love to hear about your hopes and goals, so drop a comment below!

What a great Idea! I’m doing this!
I have tried using electronic notebooks, but there is something that keeps me coming back to a simple notebook.
