Dia de los Muertos and a Day of Remembering

Dia de los Muertos at Happy Simple Living blog

I’ve always been fascinated with Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead – a holiday in honor of those who have passed away celebrated in Latin American cultures. So this year, I decided to make my own little shrine in honor of my dad, my brother and my grandparents.

It made me happy to set out their photos and collect a few things that remind me of them: one of my dad’s old Lionel trains, a mini skateboard for my brother, a deck of my grandmother’s cards and one of her old silver spoons, and some of my grandpa’s fishing flies. Today we will burn candles in their honor and remember my dad’s wry sense of humor, my brother’s gentle spirit, and my grandparents’ loving marriage.

Are you missing someone today? May your memories, faith and love sustain you on this Dia de los Muertos.
