January Money Diet Day 11 – Create Something

Pottery making at Happy Simple Living blog

What can you make this month, from materials you already have? Do your thing, whatever that may be.

Take a photograph, paint a watercolor, make a sculpture, create string art, write a poem, draw, make a pair of beaded earrings, bake a chocolate cake, punch a design in a tin can, create a terrarium in a glass jar, make wall art from toilet paper tubes (that’s right), sew an apron, paint a rock, make a video on your iPhone, build a birdfeeder or try something completely new.

If you need inspiration, Pinterest can be a fun place to find ideas. I collect mine on a board called Made by Hand.

If you’re especially creative, you may want to take some time this month to research online venues where you might sell your art to generate extra income, like Etsy, Fine Art America or Red Bubble. Or perhaps your art belongs on a t-shirt or a coffee mug; in that case, check out sites like CafePress and Zazzle.

Today’s Homework Assignment: Unleash your inner Michelangelo and create something this month — and don’t forget to tell us about it.

Enjoy the weekend,

Thanks again! I started a family quilt, made out of t-shirts that my son loved and funky fabric squares..but I have let it sit for awhile. Meanwhile, my friend has wanted me to join her at a local knit and sew shop that have a sewing session for free every Thursday night…I have not made it yet! So this idea motivated me to make a sew date with me friend and my son, who has also been helping to hand stitch our quilt! This whole project started because I wanted my son to learn to sew as a good life skill and now…thanks for helping to connect the dots!

I am part of the worship arts committee at our church. In addition to being part if the music aspect of worship I help create art and decorate the church. We just un-decorated from Advent/Christmas and I spent several hours Friday with 2 very creative friends hanging new artwork and decorating the lobby and alter. We are excited about some new art work we are creating for the Lenten/Easter season, which includes a new banner for Palm Sunday that the kids are going to help make.

  • Eliza, currently I have two projects with. Am working on. I found a complete wood bedframe set out for trash and since I don’t have a bedframe I am sanding it down to the original finish. Total cost, nothing really as I already had the sandpaper. the other was a formal adult dress in white velvet that was offered to me for free. Out of this one dress I am making two cute dresses for my granddaughters
