Day 16 of the January Money Diet – Learn a New Skill

We’ve officially passed the halfway mark of the January Money Diet! With 15 days to go, we’re on the downhill side of a month without spending. Congratulations to all of you who have risen to the task and are approaching these 31 days with creativity and resolve. Thanks to all who have left comments, too; you’ve inspired and motivated all of us!

Today’s challenge is to explore learning a new skill. The first spring we lived in this house, it seemed that every bush and shrub in the yard needed to be pruned. With our budget stretched in many directions, I happened to spot a ‘how to’ book about pruning on eBay for $3. Throughout the spring and summer I took the book outside, followed the charts and pruned 30 shrubs. In the process, I learned the skill of pruning — a very handy do-it-yourself skill that I’ve used many times since.

What have you always wanted to learn? January is a great month to acquire a new skill, and it doesn’t need to cost a penny.  Have you always wished you could lay your own tile? Your local home improvement store may offer a free workshop. Jewelry making? The library is full of illustrated books, and instructions abound on the internet. Cooking? Ask a friend to teach you how to bake bread, or watch a cooking show and learn how to make homemade pasta.

Take an online tutorial and learn a new computer skill. Pull out the instruction manual and learn about all those mysterious settings on your camera. Research your genealogical roots. Try your hand at calligraphy. Or simply spend an afternoon browsing the nonfiction shelves at the library, and see what new topic catches your fancy.

Learn something new this month – and be sure to drop by and tell us about it!

P.S. In case you’ve just joined us, the January Money Diet is a challenge to take a 31-day break from nonessential spending. You can learn more about the money diet here — and jump right in!

  • Ive always wanted to make some clay pots and paint them chaco canyon style, seeing the picture on your blog today reminded me of that. I might just have to get me some clay, thanks for the inspiration.

I have always wanted to learn how to quilt. I’m fascinated by those beautiful quilts that you see at craft shows. Unfortunately I have severe RA so using my hands like that is not really an option. I especially like the tied quilts. I am thinking about taking a digital photography course. I’ve always wanted to take better photos. I like the pictures that are black and white and sepia ones too. I’m also going to make time to learn how to make potpourri this year. I have so many things I’d like to do, it’s hard to choose.

  • My family has a lot of dietary restrictions with dairy being one of them. We go through quite a bit of soy yogurt which is pretty pricey. I decided to try making it and I discovered it was easy and about half the cost. When I opened the jar this morning I found I had a quart of wonderful yogurt!

This is not a new hobby, but when I had young kids I stopped making cards and scrapbooking. I have recently made our office into my craft room and have started to create again. I am into DIY projects of all sorts. It feels good to have an outlet. I used to play the piano and I am thinking of picking that up again also. It was extremely relaxing to me to make music.
